For fungal infection of the nails which have thickened and turned a brownish, yellowish grey color due to a combination of damp turbidity and blood stasis resulting in a local loss of nourishment and moisture of the nails.
Within this formula, Ku Shen, Da Huang, Di Fu Zi, Huang Bai, and Tu Fu Ling all clear heat and eliminate dampness, all are known to be antifungal, and all are important Chinese medicinals for external application in the treatment of especially mycotic dermatoses. Chi Shao and Tu Bie Chong quicken the blood and free the flow of the network vessels. Vinegar is also a well-known antifungal medicinal which also quickens the blood. In particular, vinegar is known to treat toenail fungus.
